Do I Need to Sign Up for MTD? Quick Check

The Accounted Tax Team·17 March 2026·2 min read

Not sure whether MTD applies to you? Run through this quick check.

The Three Questions

1. Are you a sole trader or landlord? MTD for Income Tax applies to self-employed individuals and people with property income. If you only earn PAYE employment income, MTD does not apply to you (yet).

2. Is your gross income over £50,000? Check your total self-employment and property income before expenses. This is your turnover, not your profit. If it exceeds £50,000, you must comply from April 2026. If it exceeds £30,000, you must comply from April 2027.

3. Do you have multiple income sources? Add together all your self-employment income and all your property income. PAYE employment income does not count towards the threshold, but self-employment and property income are combined.

Quick Reference

| Your situation | MTD from April 2026? | |---------------|---------------------| | Self-employed, gross income over £50,000 | Yes | | Landlord, gross rental income over £50,000 | Yes | | Combined self-employment + property over £50,000 | Yes | | Self-employed, gross income £30,000–£50,000 | No (April 2027) | | Self-employed, gross income under £30,000 | Not yet | | PAYE only, no self-employment or property | No | | Limited company director | No |

Not Sure About Your Figures?

Check your most recent Self Assessment tax return. Look at the turnover figure on your self-employment pages and any property income. If you are close to the threshold, it is worth preparing now.
