Switching from Xero to Accounted

Before you switch

• You don't need to cancel Xero first — run both in parallel until you're comfortable
• Export your chart of accounts and contact list from Xero for reference
• Note any recurring invoices or scheduled payments

Step 1: Create your Accounted account

• Sign up at accounted.tax — takes under 2 minutes
• No credit card required for the 14-day trial
• Choose your plan: Starter (£14/mo), Professional (£24/mo), Business (£34/mo), or Complete (£44/mo)

Step 2: Connect your bank

• Accounted uses Plaid for secure Open Banking connections to all major UK banks
• Your bank connections are completely separate from Xero
• Transactions import automatically from the connection date

Step 3: Let Penny categorise your transactions

• Penny, your AI bookkeeper, categorises imported transactions automatically
• Review Penny's suggestions and approve or adjust
• Penny learns from your corrections and improves over time

Step 4: Invite your accountant

• Your accountant gets a free portal — no partner programme required
• Send them an invite from Settings > Accountant Access
• They get full visibility of your books, AI workpapers, and submission tracking

Step 5: Set up HMRC connection

• Connect to HMRC via OAuth — same process as Xero
• Accounted files VAT returns, Self Assessment, and CIS returns directly
• Every submission returns a downloadable HMRC reference number

Step 6: Cancel Xero when ready

• Once you've confirmed everything is working, cancel your Xero subscription
• Your data remains in Accounted — no dependency on Xero
