Choosing a Business Name in the UK: Rules and Tips

The Accounted Business Team·17 March 2026·2 min read

Sole Trader Names

As a sole trader, you can trade under your own name or choose a business name. There is no registration requirement for a sole trader business name — you simply start using it.

Rules for Sole Trader Names

  • You must include your own name and business address on all business correspondence, invoices, and your website
  • You cannot use a name that suggests a connection with the government or local authority (without permission)
  • You cannot use offensive or sensitive words (listed on GOV.UK)
  • You cannot use "Ltd," "Limited," "PLC," or "LLP" in a sole trader name

Tips

  • Keep it simple and memorable
  • Make it relevant to what you do
  • Check that the domain name is available
  • Check social media handles are available
  • Search Companies House to avoid confusion with existing companies
  • Check the UK trademark register

Limited Company Names

Company names must be registered with Companies House and are subject to stricter rules:

  • Must not be the same as or too similar to an existing registered company
  • Must end with "Limited" or "Ltd" (or Welsh equivalents)
  • Cannot contain sensitive words without approval (Royal, British, Authority, etc.)
  • Cannot be offensive

Changing Your Name Later

Sole traders can change their business name at any time — just update your stationery, website, and inform your clients.

Limited companies can change their name by filing form NM01 with Companies House and paying a £12 fee.

Whatever name you choose, set up your finances properly from the start with Accounted.
