CIS Tax Refund: How Long Does It Take?

The Accounted Tax Team·17 March 2026·2 min read

The Typical CIS Refund Timeline

For sole traders and partnerships, CIS refunds are claimed through your Self Assessment tax return. The timeline looks like this:

Filing to Refund

  1. File your Self Assessment — you can file from 6 April after the end of the tax year
  2. HMRC processes your return — typically 1 to 4 weeks for straightforward returns
  3. Refund issued — paid to your bank account or sent as a cheque

Total time: 4 to 12 weeks from filing

If you file online and have a bank account registered with HMRC, refunds typically arrive within 4 to 6 weeks. Paper returns and cheque payments take longer.

How to Speed Up Your Refund

File Early

You can file your 2025/26 return from 6 April 2026. The earlier you file, the earlier your refund is processed. Filing in April or May often results in refunds arriving by June — months before most people even think about their tax return.

File Online

Online returns are processed faster than paper returns. They are also checked automatically, which reduces the chance of errors that delay processing.

Ensure Your Bank Details Are Correct

Set up direct payment to your bank account through your HMRC online account. This is faster than receiving a cheque.

Check Your Figures

Errors on your return trigger manual review, which delays processing. Double-check your income, expenses, and CIS deductions before submitting.

Match HMRC's Records

If your claimed CIS deductions do not match what your contractors reported to HMRC, your return may be flagged for investigation. Check your HMRC online account to see what deductions are recorded and resolve any discrepancies before filing.

What Causes Delays?

  • Errors on the return — wrong figures or missing information
  • Discrepancies — your claimed deductions do not match HMRC's records
  • HMRC compliance checks — random or targeted reviews of returns
  • High volume periods — January submissions are processed more slowly due to volume

Limited Company Refunds

Limited companies reclaim CIS through PAYE offset (monthly) or at year end. Monthly offset is faster — you reduce your PAYE payment each month. Year-end refund claims take 4 to 8 weeks.

Track Your Refund

You can check the status of your refund through your HMRC online account or by calling the Self Assessment helpline on 0300 200 3310.

With Accounted, your CIS deductions are tracked year-round, so filing is fast and accurate — getting your refund to you sooner.
