Connecting Your Bank Account

Connecting your bank to Accounted

Accounted uses Open Banking to securely connect to your bank account. This gives Penny, your AI bookkeeper, a live feed of your transactions so she can categorise them automatically.

What is Open Banking?

Open Banking is a UK-regulated framework that lets you securely share your bank data with authorised third parties — like Accounted. It was introduced by the Competition and Markets Authority and is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Key points about Open Banking:

  • We never see your bank login details. You authenticate directly with your bank.
  • Read-only access. Accounted can view your transactions but cannot move money or make payments.
  • You're in control. You can revoke access at any time, either from Accounted or through your bank's app.
  • Regulated and secure. Our Open Banking provider is FCA-authorised and uses bank-grade encryption.

Supported banks

Accounted supports all major UK high-street banks, including:

  • Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Santander, Nationwide
  • Digital banks: Monzo, Starling, Revolut, Tide, Chase UK
  • Business accounts at all of the above

If your bank isn't listed when you try to connect, please contact support and we'll look into adding it.

How to connect

  1. Go to Settings > Bank Connections in your Accounted dashboard.
  2. Click "Add Bank Account" and search for your bank.
  3. You'll be redirected to your bank's website or app to log in and authorise the connection. This is handled entirely by your bank — we never see your credentials.
  4. Select the account(s) you'd like to connect. If you have a dedicated business account, connect that one. You can also connect a personal account if you use it for business transactions.
  5. Confirm the connection. You'll be redirected back to Accounted, and your transactions will begin importing within a few minutes.

After connecting

Once connected, Penny will import your recent transactions (up to 90 days of history, depending on your bank) and begin categorising them. You'll see transactions appear in your dashboard with confidence scores indicating how certain Penny is about each categorisation.

Re-authorisation

Open Banking connections typically need to be re-authorised every 90 days. Accounted will notify you by email and WhatsApp when re-authorisation is due, and the process takes less than a minute.

Troubleshooting

  • Connection fails: Try again in a few minutes. Some banks experience intermittent issues with Open Banking.
  • Missing transactions: Transactions can take up to 24 hours to appear after the initial connection. If older transactions are missing, your bank may limit historical data.
  • Multiple accounts: You can connect as many bank accounts as you need. Each will appear separately in your transaction feed.
