Do I Need to Do a Self Assessment Tax Return?

The Accounted Tax Team·17 March 2026·1 min read

You need to file a Self Assessment return if any of these apply:

  • You are self-employed and earned more than £1,000
  • You are a landlord with rental income
  • You earned more than £150,000 in total
  • You had savings or investment income over your tax-free allowances
  • You are a company director
  • You received foreign income
  • You need to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge (income over £60,000)
  • You owe Capital Gains Tax
  • You receive pension income that is not fully taxed through PAYE

If None Apply

If you only earn PAYE employment income and your tax is fully collected through your tax code, you probably do not need Self Assessment.

If You Are Unsure

HMRC has an online tool to check whether you need to file. Search "check if you need to file a Self Assessment return" on GOV.UK.
