How to Start a Nutritionist or Dietitian Business in the UK
Nutrition is a growing field, but it is important to understand the distinction between dietitians and nutritionists in the UK — the regulatory requirements differ significantly.
Protected Titles
Dietitian is a protected title. You must be registered with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) to use it. This requires a degree in dietetics approved by the HCPC. Annual registration costs around £106.
Nutritionist is not a protected title. However, Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) and Registered Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) are voluntary registrations with the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), managed by the Association for Nutrition (AfN). Registration demonstrates competence and is increasingly expected by employers and clients.
Qualifications
- Dietitians — BSc or MSc in Dietetics (HCPC-approved)
- Nutritionists — BSc or MSc in Nutrition or a related subject. AfN-accredited programmes allow direct registration.
- Nutritional therapy — various Level 4+ qualifications from providers like CNM, ION, or BANT-accredited courses. These practitioners are not dietitians and should be clear about their scope of practice.
Sole Trader or Limited Company?
Most nutritionists and dietitians in private practice operate as sole traders. Simple and appropriate for the income levels and business model.
Registering with HMRC
Register for Self Assessment within three months. VAT: dietetics services provided by HCPC-registered dietitians are exempt from VAT as a health profession. Nutritional therapy by non-HCPC registrants may be standard-rated — take professional advice on your specific situation.
Insurance
- Professional indemnity — essential. Covers claims arising from your dietary advice.
- Public liability — if clients visit your premises
- Product liability — if you sell supplements or food products
- Employers' liability — if you hire staff
Expect £150–£400 per year.
