MTD and Your HMRC Online Account
Your HMRC online account does not disappear under MTD — it works alongside your MTD software. Here is how the two interact.
What You See in Your HMRC Account
After signing up for MTD, your Government Gateway account shows:
- MTD obligations: Your quarterly update deadlines and whether each has been met
- Submission history: A record of quarterly updates and final declarations submitted
- Tax estimate: A running calculation of your tax position based on submitted updates
- Payments: What you owe and what you have paid
What Your Software Does
Your MTD software handles the day-to-day:
- Keeping your digital records
- Categorising transactions
- Preparing and submitting quarterly updates
- Generating your final declaration
You do not need to log into HMRC's website to submit MTD information — everything goes through your software.
When to Use Your HMRC Account
Use your HMRC online account to:
- Check your overall tax position
- View your payment schedule
- Set up a Time to Pay arrangement if needed
- Manage your agent authorisations
- Update your personal details
Government Gateway Credentials
You need a Government Gateway user ID and password to sign up for MTD and to authorise your software. If you already file Self Assessment online, you have these. If not, you can create an account on GOV.UK.
Keep your Government Gateway credentials safe — you will need them to re-authorise your software periodically.
Accounted guides you through the Government Gateway connection process during setup.
