How to Log In to Self Assessment Online
To access your Self Assessment online, you need a Government Gateway account linked to your UTR.
Step by Step
- Go to GOV.UK and search for "Self Assessment"
- Click "File your Self Assessment tax return online"
- Log in with your Government Gateway user ID and password
- Complete any two-factor authentication (text message or app code)
- You are in your Self Assessment account
If You Have Forgotten Your Login
User ID: Click "I have forgotten my Government Gateway user ID" and HMRC will email it to the address on your account.
Password: Click "I have forgotten my password" and follow the reset process.
If You Have Never Logged In
You need to:
- Create a Government Gateway account at GOV.UK
- Enrol for Self Assessment using your UTR and National Insurance number
- Wait for an activation code by post (7-10 days)
- Enter the activation code to complete enrolment
