Cancelling Your Subscription
Cancelling your subscription
We hope you won't need this article, but if you do decide to cancel your Accounted subscription, here's how it works and what happens to your data.
How to cancel
- Go to Settings > Subscription in your Accounted dashboard.
- Click "Cancel Subscription".
- Tell us why (optional) — We'd appreciate knowing why you're leaving so we can improve, but this step is entirely optional.
- Confirm cancellation — Click "Confirm" to finalise.
Your cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. You'll continue to have full access to Accounted until then.
What happens when you cancel
Immediately after cancelling:
- Your subscription is marked for cancellation, but nothing changes right away.
- You retain full access to all features until the end of your current billing period.
- You won't be charged again.
At the end of your billing period:
- Your account enters a "paused" state.
- You can still log in and view your data, but you cannot create new transactions, run reports, or interact with Penny.
- Your bank connections will be disconnected.
- HMRC submissions will stop.
After 90 days of being paused:
- Your data is scheduled for deletion.
- We'll send you a reminder email 14 days before deletion, giving you a final chance to export your data or reactivate.
Exporting your data before cancelling
We strongly recommend exporting your data before cancelling. You can export:
- Full transaction ledger — A CSV file containing every transaction, with categories, dates, amounts, and notes.
- Receipt archive — A ZIP file containing all receipt images you've uploaded.
- Invoice PDFs — All invoices you've created, as individual PDFs.
- Reports — Your Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, and any other reports, as PDFs.
- HMRC submission history — Records of all quarterly updates and year-end filings submitted through Accounted, including HMRC acknowledgement references.
To export, go to Settings > Data Export and select what you'd like to download. Large exports may take a few minutes to prepare.
Reactivating your account
If you change your mind within 90 days of cancelling:
- Log in to your Accounted account.
- Go to Settings > Subscription.
- Click "Reactivate" and choose a plan.
- Your data, connections, and settings will be restored.
Note: if you were on founding member pricing, reactivation within 90 days will preserve your discount. After 90 days, the discount may no longer be available.
What about my HMRC obligations?
Cancelling Accounted does not cancel your Making Tax Digital obligations. If you're required to file quarterly updates with HMRC, you'll need to use another MTD-compatible software after cancelling.
Before cancelling, check whether you have any upcoming quarterly deadlines. We recommend completing any pending submissions before your subscription ends.
Deleting your account entirely
If you want your data deleted immediately rather than waiting 90 days, you can request this from Settings > Account > Delete Account, or by contacting hello@accounted.co.uk. Account deletion is permanent and irreversible.
Under UK GDPR, we're required to retain certain data (such as HMRC submission records) for legal compliance purposes, even after account deletion. We'll inform you of exactly what is retained and why.
We'd love you to stay
If you're considering cancelling because of a specific issue — whether it's a feature that's missing, a bug you've encountered, or something about pricing — please reach out to hello@accounted.co.uk before cancelling. We're a small, responsive team and we genuinely want to make Accounted work for you.
