Can I Claim Work Clothes as a Business Expense?

The Accounted Tax Team·17 March 2026·2 min read

The General Rule: No

If your work clothes could be worn in everyday life, they're not an allowable business expense. A suit, smart dress, or pair of black trousers fails the test — even if you only ever wear them for work.

HMRC's logic: these items serve the dual purpose of clothing you (personal) and making you look professional (business). The personal element disqualifies them.

What You Can Claim

Protective clothing: Hard hats, steel-toed boots, high-vis jackets, safety goggles, overalls for dirty work. These are necessary for safety, not everyday wear.

Branded uniforms: Clothing with your business logo that you wouldn't wear casually. A plain polo shirt doesn't qualify; a polo shirt prominently embroidered with your company name and logo might.

Specialist occupational clothing: Chef's whites, theatrical costumes, wetsuits for marine workers, scrubs for healthcare. Items specific to your trade that have no everyday use.

Laundry costs: If the clothing itself is allowable, the cost of cleaning it is too — including a flat rate of £60 per year for washing at home.

Common Questions

"I only wear this suit to client meetings." Still not allowable. The suit is suitable for everyday wear regardless of your personal choice.

"I need smart clothes because my job requires it." HMRC doesn't distinguish between "work smart" and "personal smart." Smart clothing is smart clothing.

"My employer's dress code requires specific items." If you're employed, there may be tax relief for uniforms. For sole traders, the clothing must meet the protective/uniform/specialist test.
